Tuesday, January 13, 2004:
My flight left Indianapolis around 10:00 in the morning.
I flew to Cincinnati for my 9.5 hour non-stop flight to Honolulu.
It was a beautiful day for flying, clear skies almost all the way to Hawaii.
I had nice views of Louisville, Denver, The Rocky Mountains, San Francisco
and Honolulu during my Delta 767-400 flight.

The only thing I accomplished this day was getting settled
into the Doubletree Alana Hotel where I was staying in Waikiki.
Wednesday, January 14, 2004:
It was kind of a gloomy start to my Hawaiian holiday. Scattered showers were about
and the wind was blowing at almost hurricane force. Large parts of the island would
be without power before days end due to the high winds. The helicopter tour I had
scheduled for this morning was cancelled due to the blustery weather.
My first stop today was Hanauma Bay located 8 miles east of Honolulu.
Just a few feet down the road along the Kalanianaole Highway is my favorite spot on O'hau.
The pounding surf along these east coast cliffs is fun to watch.
The wind was blowing so strong it was difficult just to keep standing.
Driving around started getting difficult as there were numerous
power outages and lots of traffic lights weren't working.
Weather improved later that afternoon and I visited The Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu.
Aloha Tower was built to a height of 10 stories - 184 feet, 2 inches, topped by a
40-foot flag staff. For four decades it was the tallest building not only in Downtown
Honolulu, but also all of Hawaii. Spreading from its base were the docks, warehouses,
passenger-handling and other facilities of Piers 8,9,10 and 11, the core of Honolulu
Harbor's commercial activity. This is the view looking north from the top of the tower.
Falls of Clyde is docked at Pier 7 next to the Aloha Tower.
After dark I walked all around Waikiki doing a little shopping and
watching the many street performers along Kalakaua Ave.

Thursday, January 15, 2004:
Weather was beautiful today. One third of O'ahu can be seen from Pu'u Ualaka'a State Wayside.
Also known as The Punch Bowl, The National Cemetery of the Pacific
lies in the middle of Puowaina Crater.
Nu'uanu Pali State Wayside offers a dramatic panorama of
windward O'hau's valleys and coastline.
This windy 1200-foot-high gap is flanked by cliffs that rise 2000 to 3000 feet.
Weather wasn't a problem this day. There wasn't a cloud in the
sky for my Makani Kai Helicopter Tour.
The first thing we flew over after leaving the airport was Pearl Harbor.
We continued flying west and passed over The Dole Plantation.
A little further west we reached the beautiful west coast of O'ahu.
We then turned around and flew over to O'hau's east coast.
This is southeast O'hau approaching Diamond Head.
We were almost back to the airport as we flew over The National Cemetery of the Pacific.
This was my first time in a helicopter and I enjoyed the one hour tour very much.
I spent the rest of the afternoon and evening on beautiful Waikiki Beach.
That is Diamond Head on the far right of the picture.
It was a beautiful evening. This is looking west down Waikiki Beach.
And the sun set on a perfect day in paradise.

Friday, January 16, 2004:
This is Honolulu International Airport as I flew out early Friday morning for Lihue, Kaua'i.
After arriving in Lihue I checked into my hotel at The Radisson Kauai Beach Resort.
My first order of business on Kaua'i was my deluxe ninty minute Jack Harter Helicopter Tour.
We began flying south as we left the Lihue Airport.
You can see the Ninini Point Lighthouse in the extreme lower right corner.
This is the southeastern coast of the garden isle.
The coastal regions of Kaua'i are dotted with towns, but the
interior of the island is pretty much uninhabited.
The waterfalls on Kaua'i are too numerous to count.
On this longer 90 minute flight there was more time to take in the breath-taking scenery.
We would fly into canyon after canyon with the walls of the canyons towering far above us.
Mt. Waialeale, the wettest spot on earth, is located not far from here.
Unfortunately they don't make a wide enough lens to capture the entire beauty of Waimea Canyon.
Waimea Canyon is the largest canyon in the Pacific and truly a dramatic sight to behold.
The canyon measures 10 miles long, 1 mile wide, and more than 3,500-feet deep.
Now over the northwest coast, this is the start of the spectacular Na Pali Cliffs.
The rugged Na Pali Coast has been featured in many movies including Jurassic Park.
Haena State Park, this is where the road along the north shore ends and the Na Pali Coast begins.
Highway 560 west of Princeville is narrow and winding.
This was truly a remarkable experience that I hoped would never end.
The Wailua River is the only navigable river in all of Hawaii.
More waterfalls here than will fit into one picture frame.
Wailua Falls were featured on the beginning of TV's Fantasy Island.
Now back over Lihue.
The tour ended as we landed back at the Lihue Airport.

Saturday, January 17, 2004:
This is Spouting Horn. Water, forced into a lava tube by the surf,
gushes into the air making an eerie hissing noise.
This is looking west from Spouting Horn along Kauai's south coast.
These 150-year-old Eucalyptus Trees form a Tree Tunnel along highway 520.
This scenic view is along highway 50 near Kalaheo in south Kaua'i.
This is beautiful downtown Hanapepe, Hawaii.
This is the newly constructed swinging bridge across the river
in Hanapepe. The old one was destroyed by Hurricane Iniki in 1992.
This is Wiamea Canyon State Park on the west side of Kaua'i.
Kalalau Lookout. This glorious lookout provides a panoramic
view of the Kalalau Valley, the largest valley on Na Pali.
This is beautiful Poipu Beach, the southern most point on Kaua'i.
Still at Poipu Beach, the weather was flawless.
Poipu Beach, a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon.

I got up early and watched the sun rise over the beach at my hotel.
Wailua River is a long, slowly meadering river that starts at
the Wai'ale'ale Crater and is fed by several tributaries on the way to the ocean.
This is the only navigable river in all of Hawaii.
This is Opaeka'a Falls, Located off the north branch of the Wailua River.
This is Kilauea Point, northernmost point of the main Hawaiian Islands.
Built in 1913, it once had the largest lens of it's kind
and guided ships heading to and from the Orient.
Native vegetations and an informative visitor center attract thousands of tourists to this
site to bird watch, view the sweeping cliff and ocean vistas, and revel in Kaua's past.
I spent a little time here watching a whale off the coast which kept popping up.
This is Princeville, a gorgeous resort area was named after Prince Albert,
the son of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma.
This beautiful, Roman fountain graces the entrance to the Princeville Hotel.
The sweeping ocean views from the Princeville Hotel are impressive.
The weather continued to be perfect for most of my stay in the islands.
The is the Hanalei Lookout. The majority of all of Hawaii's taro is grown here.
Taro is used to make poi.
This is Hanalei, Hawaii.
Highway 560 is narrow and winding past Hanalei with many one-lane bridges.
This is Ha'ena State Park. This is the end of the road on the north shore.
The Na Pali Coast begins here. The force of the pounding surf is impressive.
This is Bubba's Burgers in Wailua where I ate lunch. They cheat tourists, drunks and attorneys.
I enjoyed my last afternoon on Kaua'i sitting on the beach at my hotel.

Monday, January 19, 2004:
It was time to change islands again. I had a very early morning flight out of Lihue.
This is The Maui Coast Hotel where I stayed in Kihei.
The first place that I visited on Maui was Haleakala National Park.
The road to the Haleakala summit holds the world record for
climbing to the highest elevation in the shortest disatnce (38 miles).
Elevation at the summit is 10,023 feet.
Driving the never-ending series of switchbacks toward Haleakala resembles driving to the moon.
One of my favorite places on Maui is Iao Valley State Park.
Iao Valley is a peaceful lush area with easy hikes, exotic tropical plants,
and clear, natural pools. The ridge-top lookout offers a fantastic
view of the valley and Kahului Harbor.
The lovely, deep valley of 'Iao features the 'Iao Needle, a natural rock pinnacle
presiding over the 'Iao stream and surrounded by the walls of the Pu'u Kukui Crater.
'Iao Valley is the site of one of the most famous battles that occurred in
1790 and changed Hawaii history forever when King Kamehameha I destroyed
the Maui army in an effort to unite the Hawaiian Islands.
'Iao Needle rising 2,250 feet high.

Spent a good portion of this day in the air over Maui, Moloka'i and the Big Island.
This is Nik (center) my pilot with Paragon Air who flew me around today.
Our first order of business was to pick up some passengers in West Maui
and fly them over to the island of Moloka'i.
Approximately 6700 people reside on the sparsely populated island of Moloka'i.
Rarely seen Kahiwa Falls, the state's longest cascade, leaps 1750 feet
to the sea from the spectacular north coast cliffs of Moloka'i.
After dropping our passengers on Moloka'i Nik flew me over to the Big Island.
We flew directly over Maui enroute providing sweeping views of the island.
This is Kahului, Maui's largest city.
A different perspective of Haleakala National Park.
Now over the Big Island, this is Mauna Kea, elevation 13,796 feet.
This is Hilo, Hawaii.
After landing in Hilo it was time for my Blue Hawaii Helicopter tour.
There was a major eruption here just a couple of days prior.
It was a good day to view the activity at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
As you can see, this lava flow is quite impressive.
Our pilot did a good job of getting us close to the best spots.
The land area on the Big Island is constantly growing as the lava joins the coast.
We flew over several beautiful waterfalls as we flew back to Hilo.
This is the shore of the Big Island just north of Hilo.
After the helicopter tour Nik flew me and a couple other passengers back to Maui.
This is Kihei, the resort area where I'm staying on Maui's south shore.
We flew directly over where I was staying, The Maui Coast Hotel.

Wednesday, January 21, 2004:
The Road to Hana is a long, narrow and winding one.
Many interesting things to see along the way, including rainforests.
The many tropical plants are a sight to behold.
The waterfalls are numerous, however the several nice days of weather
made the volume of water in many of them almost nil.
The vegetation includes every spectrum of the rainbow.
This is a duck pond at The Garden of Eden.
This was a beautiful peacock also at The Garden of Eden.
This is a particularly scenic stretch of this well-worn tourist route.
There's another scenic vista around every bend in the road.
This is the village of Wailua a little over half way to Hana.
This is a familiar sight to all Hana travelers.
There's dozens of these one lane bridges during the trek to Hana.
Sometimes it is hard to get out and enjoy the wonders along the road.
The road is narrow and often no place to stop the car.
This is Wai'anapanapa State Park near Hana.
You can see the beautiful black sand beach in the background.
Wai'anapanapa means "glistening waters."
These are The Seven Sacred Pools.
Kids would actually jump from the bridge above into the upper pool.
This is part of Haleakala National Park on the far east coast of Maui.
This is the view on top of the bridge looking west.
Fresh coconut anyone? This is as far as the paved road goes
It was a LONG drive to the hotel back the same way I came.

Today I would explore the west side of the island.
This is Front Street in Lahaina.
It was still early so the shops along Front Street weren't open yet.
This is the resort area along Kaanapali Beach.
This was my last day on Maui. Weather continued to be fantastic.
This is the north coast of Maui.
This would be me standing along the isolated cliffs of Maui's north shore.
The road wasn't bad here, but it would get much worse soon.
This part of Maui is almost totally desolate.
You have the spectacular beauty all to yourself.
The road out here is a real adventure when there's a car coming the other way.
This is Old Kahakuloa Village.
Looking back on Old Kahakuloa Village from a bluff just outside town.
To say the least the road out here was decrepit, but the scenery made it well worth it.

I flew back to Honolulu today for one last night in Hawaii before heading back to the mainland.
I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki.
I had a nice view of Waikiki from my balcony.
I don't know when I have enjoyed a vacation more than this one.
Saturday, January 24, 2004:
I had fourteen more hours in Hawaii and began by visiting the Arizona Memorial.
On a quiet Sunday morning December 7, 1941 a Japanese surprise air attack
left the Pacific Fleet in smoldering heaps of broken, twisted steel.
Here, peace was interrupted and paradise lost.
The USS Arizona is the final resting place for many of the ship's 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives.
The shrine room, where the names of those killed on the Arizona are engraved on the marble wall.
This is the 'Iolani Palace.
This is the Judiciary Building. The statue in front is King Kamehameha.
This is the state capitol building of our nation's 50th state.

Sunday, January 25, 2004:
My flight left Honolulu just before midnight. This is sunrise over Utah.
It was a very snowy Salt Lake City. A far cry from what I left behind in Hawaii.
This is the 767-400 which brought me across the Pacific.
I had a three hour lay-over in Salt Lake City before flying to Las Vegas.
This is Las Vegas just before landing.
