Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, 2004.


I left home at around 12:30 after I got off work and drove to Metropolis, Illinois.
I visited Harrah's Metropolis Casino on the Ohio River where I won $101.75.


Before retiring for the evening I took a walk through Fort Massnac State Park along the Ohio River.

Tuesday, June 1, 2004.


I had a long drive ahead of me on Tuesday morning, but I did take a quick spin around Metropolis before leaving.
Being the legendary home of Superman, a 15-foot bronze statue of the super-hero stands in downtown.


Since I was driving over 600 miles this day, I made very few stops.
I took a brief stroll through downtown Jaskson, Mississippi. This is the State Capitol Building.

I arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana around 7:00.
I took a short walk along the River Walk across from my hotel before retiring.


Wednesday, June 2, 2004.


I awoke the next morning to a very gloomy and rainy start to my holiday.
I figured I better start my day indoors so I visited the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas.
Movie of the aquarium is available further down the page.


Weather had improved after leaving the aquarium so I cruised the Mississippi River aboard The Steamboat Natchez.


Jackson Square was one of the first things we passed on the two hour cruise.


We got a nice view of the New Orleans skyline from the Mississippi River.


I stayed at the Doubletree Hotel, which is conveniently located within walking distance of most downtown attractions.
The Doubletree is the smaller brown building in the center of this photo.
The World Trade Center in the tall building on the left. The River Walk runs all along the river.
Harrah's Casino is just below my hotel, I didn't fare too well there.


After leaving the boat I walked all around the historic French Quarter.
This is St. Louis Cathedral, the focal point of Jackson Square.


Some 90 blocks represents the original French Colonial settlement of Nouvelle Orleans.


I rested my feet at an afternoon movie before hitting the streets again just before sunset. This is the River Walk.


It was a beautiful evening for a walk. This is Jackson Square again.


The infamous Bourbon Street is bustling with activity after dark.


The moon was shining brightly over the Mississippi as I made my way back to the hotel.

Thursday, June 3, 2004.


Weather started off nice on Thursday. I made a brief visit to the Audubon Zoo.

Thursday afternoon I drove about 50 miles west of the city and toured Oak Alley Plantation.


The alley of 300-year-old oaks in front of the mansion is very impressive.

Friday, June 4, 2004.


I left New Orleans on Friday morning. I made a late morning stop in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
This is the State Capitol Building.


You get a nice view of downtown and The Mississippi River from the 27th floor of the building.

Saturday, June 5, 2004.


I began my Saturday morning by walking around downtown Houston, Texas.
This is Sam Houston Park across the street from my hotel.


You get a nice view of the downtown skyline from in front of their new ballpark, Minute Maid Field.


The 2004 All-Star Game will be played here.

This 570-foot sandstone obelisk is the San Jacinto Monument.


From the top of the monument you can see The Battleship Texas and the historic battleground site.

Next it was off to The Johnson Space Center.


This is Historic Mission Control where the Apollo missions were controlled.

Sunday, June 6, 2004.


On Sunday I moved on Galveston. My first stop was Moody Gardens.


The first of the three pyramids I visited was the tropical rainforest.


Inside are thousands of exotic plants from the rainforests Africa, Asia and South America.


There are also streams, waterfalls and abundant wildlife.


The second pyramid I visited was the aquarium which is home to 8000 specimens of fish.


The third pyramid was the Discovery Pyramid which offered exhibits that expolored the world of science.


One of the main highlights of the 242-acre complex are the beautifully landscaped grounds.


While there I also took and hour long cruise on the Colonel Paddlewheeler Boat.


During our cruise of Offats Bayou we got several nice views of The Moody Gardens complex.

Monday, June 7, 2004.


I drove nearly 250 miles to San Antonio on Monday where my first stop was the Tower of the Americas.

The view from the top of the 750-foot tower is impressive.


The tower is located in Hemisfair Park, which was the site the 1968 World's Fair.


My hotel was located at the north end of the beautiful downtown Riverwalk.


The Alamo is located in downtown San Antonio not far from the river.


The Riverwalk extends right into the center of the River Center Mall.


It is fun getting around in downtown San Antonio, just hop on one of these river taxis and off you go.

Wednesday, June 9, 2004.


On Wednesday I journeyed to the most remote national park in the continental United States.


Big Bend National Park is located along the Rio Grande River on the Mexican border.


This would be me at the Sotol Vista on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive in the park.


The park is enormous at over 800,000 acres.


This is Santa Elena Canyon. The 1513-foot high walls of the canyon are in Mexico.


This is the Chisos Basin in the center of the park.


This is the Rio Grande River and the Mexican border near Rio Grande Village.


I traveled nearly 400 miles getting to and from the park and driving through it.

Thursday, June 10, 2004.


One of my first stops on Thursday was Gaudalupe Mountains National Park.


The park is located along the New Mexico border in west Texas.

Next it was into New Mexico to visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park.


The park road to the entrance of the caverns is very scenic.


A series of rooms forms one of the world's largest caves.
It is impossible to photograph since the area is so large and dark.

Friday, June 11, 2004.


On Friday I drove to Dallas. My first stop was Dealey Plaza where JFK was shot.


I visited the Sixth Floor Museum. JFK's life, death and legacy are chronicled at the site of the assassination.


Next I walked over to Reunion Tower rising 50-stories over downtown Dallas.


There is a spectacular 360 degree view of Dallas from the observation deck.

Saturday, June 12, 2004.


I made a quick stop to see the Ewings at the South Fork Ranch as I headed out of Texas.


I breezed through Hope, Arkansas the birthplace of President Bill Clinton.


Hot Springs, Arkansas was the boyhood home of President Bill Clinton.


This is the view from the park's Mountain Tower.


And yet more Bill Clinton historic spots, he served as governor here.


I spent the final night of my trip in Little Rock, Arkansas.
