Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson is a cool,
beautiful homicide investigator with uncanny intuition.
A Southern bellwether recruited from Atlanta to head a special crimes
unit in Los Angeles, that handles sensitive, high-profile murder cases,
displacing seasoned officers.
Despite a tendency to step on people's toes,
Johnson manages to convert even her strongest
adversaries with her unique ability to get to the truth.
"If I liked being called a bitch to my face,"
she tells one insolent colleague, "I'd still be married."
She rides roughshod over their resentment,
Relying on her keener intelligence and eerie interrogative skills.

Although she clashes with some colleagues, her skills as a CIA-trained
interrogator prove invaluable in obtaining confessions.
Brenda Johnson is a mature divorcée and experienced detective,
and she can be as bossy and strong-minded as any man.
But she wields her Southern accent like a wand, using honeyed sarcasm to
confound men and antebellum flattery to beguile and disarm suspects.
She also slept with the boss (oops).
It turns out that she had a steamy affair with Assistant Police Chief Will Pope,
a married man, and it is he who engineers her transfer.
As a woman and an outsider, she must fight for the respect she deserves
from her old-boy network colleagues while trying to solve homicides.
